Background of the Study
Child mortality remains one of the most critical indicators of a nation’s health status, and reducing it is a priority in many developing regions. In Gombe Local Government Area, adult education has emerged as a potential strategy to address high child mortality rates by empowering parents and caregivers with the knowledge required for better child health practices. Over the past decade, adult education programs focusing on health literacy, nutritional awareness, and hygiene practices have been implemented to help reduce preventable child deaths (Balogun, 2023). These programs emphasize practical health interventions, such as immunization schedules, breastfeeding practices, and sanitation, which are essential for improving child survival rates. Research has shown that when parents are well-informed, they are more likely to adopt health practices that significantly lower the risk of infections and malnutrition among children (Afolabi, 2024). Moreover, community-based health education initiatives have demonstrated success in creating awareness and promoting behavior change, which is crucial in contexts where traditional practices may contribute to higher child mortality (Okoro, 2025). In Gombe, adult education serves as a catalyst for disseminating critical health information to caregivers, enabling them to make informed decisions about child care. The integration of modern health education with traditional knowledge offers a holistic approach to combating child mortality by combining evidence-based practices with culturally sensitive methods. Furthermore, the use of digital platforms and mobile health applications in these programs has broadened access to health resources, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas. The study will explore how adult education can be leveraged to reduce child mortality rates by improving health-seeking behavior among parents and caregivers. By drawing on contemporary research and local case studies, this investigation aims to provide comprehensive insights into the effectiveness of adult education as a tool for improving child health outcomes (Balogun, 2023; Afolabi, 2024; Okoro, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite concerted efforts to improve child health, Gombe Local Government Area continues to experience high child mortality rates. A significant factor contributing to this challenge is the inadequate dissemination of crucial health information among parents and caregivers. Many adults lack access to modern health education, which limits their ability to adopt practices that prevent common childhood illnesses (Balogun, 2023). Traditional beliefs and misinformation further compound the problem, leading to delays in seeking timely medical intervention. Although several adult education programs have been initiated to address these issues, their impact remains constrained by factors such as limited reach, insufficient funding, and cultural resistance (Afolabi, 2024). Moreover, the lack of systematic evaluation of these programs means that there is little empirical evidence to guide future interventions. This gap in knowledge hinders the ability of policymakers and health practitioners to design and implement strategies that effectively reduce child mortality. The present study seeks to address this problem by examining the extent to which adult education influences health practices among parents and caregivers in Gombe. It will investigate the specific components of educational programs that contribute to improved child health outcomes, such as vaccination awareness, nutritional guidance, and hygiene education. Additionally, the study will assess the barriers that prevent the full adoption of these practices and identify potential solutions to overcome them (Okoro, 2025). By providing a detailed analysis of the relationship between adult education and child mortality, this research aims to fill the critical gap in existing literature and offer actionable recommendations for enhancing health education programs in the region (Balogun, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the impact of adult education on child mortality reduction in Gombe.
To identify key health practices adopted by parents through adult education.
To recommend strategies for improving the effectiveness of health education programs.
Research Questions:
How does adult education affect child mortality rates in Gombe Local Government Area?
What health practices are most influenced by adult education among caregivers?
What challenges hinder the effective implementation of health education programs?
Research Hypotheses:
Adult education significantly reduces child mortality by improving health practices.
Caregivers who participate in adult education programs are more likely to adopt preventive health measures.
Integration of digital health tools in adult education enhances the reduction of child mortality rates.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the critical role of adult education in reducing child mortality in Gombe. By examining how health education can transform parental behavior and improve child health outcomes, the research provides essential insights for health policymakers and practitioners. The findings will inform the design of targeted interventions aimed at increasing health literacy and fostering sustainable behavior change, ultimately contributing to better child survival rates and community well-being (Okoro, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to exploring the effect of adult education on reducing child mortality rates in Gombe Local Government Area, Gombe State. It focuses solely on health education and excludes other determinants of child mortality. Data collection is restricted to local health centers and adult education programs.
Definitions of Terms:
Child Mortality: The death of children under the age of five.
Health Education: Programs that provide information and training on health practices and preventive measures.
Preventive Health Measures: Actions taken to prevent illness or injury, including vaccinations and proper hygiene.
